Connections A Hypertext Resource for Literature

Creative Response

This assignment asks you to apply your close reading and analytical skills to a small creative project: a scene from Grinnell inspired by James Joyce's method in Dubliners and/or Edward P. Jones's in Lost in the City. The assignment consists of the following parts:

  1. A title
  2. A scene of 300-400 words from the imagined story series Grinnellians, using Joyce's or Jones's style of third-person narration and his techniques such as capturing the turns of everyday speech, creating subtle patterns of images and metaphors, and so forth.
  3. A reflection of about a page (300-500 words) explaining what parts of Joyce's or Jones's methods you adapted at three levels: the selection of content or subject matter for your piece, its sentence structure, and its diction (choice of words).
We will spend Wednesday's class sharing your scenes in a collective fiction reading from Grinnellians.
