Connections A Hypertext Resource for Literature

Final Paper

The final paper should be about 1200 to 1500 words long, roughly four or five pages. It should address any two of the stories by Joyce or Jones from this unit. (You may choose two works by the same author or one each from the two authors.) The paper should use at least two secondary or contextual sources--these may include pieces from the syllabus--to situate its argument. If you have any questions about whether a source is appropriate for the assignment, just email me. I'm happy to answer those questions.

For general guidance on approaching essays comparing two works, see this page about comparison essays on Connections.

The paper should use Chicago style for its footnotes and bibliography. It will be graded on a conventional letter grade scale, and you will have the opportunity to revise it for a higher grade in the final portfolio.

For formatting the papers, the following elements are helpful to me as a reader:

  • Basic heading information: your name, my name, and the course (English 120)
  • A title
  • Double-spaced text

Other decisions--the font, whether to use a title page, and so forth--are up to you. If you have any questions about formatting, feel free to ask in class or pop me an email.
