Zine Project

Standard Version

The zine assignment will include three components:

• Your zine. To make the zine itself, create a complete work in the genre of the other other zines we have seen. Use at least three different visual techniques, such as handwriting, drawing, pasted illustration, folding--any techniques will work, as long as you combine them thoughtfully to create the overall effect of your zine. You can make your Zine out of paper or digitally through FlipHTML5.
• Description of inspiration. In this short essay of 300-500 words, place your zine in the context of other zines you have seen, either for this class or otherwise. Explain how you have created your zine in the spirit of--or resisting the spirit of--the zines that have helped you think about your own work.
• Explanation of content-form connection. In this short essay of 200-400 words, describe the ways in which you have chosen the form of your zine to support the effect you want the work to create. You can talk about illustrations, forms of typography or handwriting, medium (including print or digital), and any other choices you find important.

Extra Version

The extra version of the zine assignment will include two additional components, to be added after receiving feedback on the initial version:

• An additional zine that serves as a companion piece to your first one.
• Explanation of content-form connection in the two-zine pairing. This essay of 400-600 words will address the same issues as the content-form essay in the standard assignment, but this one will address both of your zines. It will also draw on at least three secondary or theoretical sources that discuss zines directly or introduce conceptual issues that you have engaged in your zines.
